Grand Prix athletics

133We had a great evening out on Friday at the Norwich Union Grand Prix athletics, Crystal Palace. Thanks to the generosity of a friend we had ringside seats for the pole vault. Sadly Isinbayeva failed to clear 5.02m for a new world record. She did, however, make it over 4.91m, setting a record height for 2006.

Based on what other people have told me in the past I’ve always assumed that athletics is actually best watched on TV – you get close ups of all the action, wherever in the stadium that might be taking place, along with knowledgeable commentary. That’s certainly true but what you don’t get is the atmosphere and, perhaps most interestingly, the chance to see what the athletes get up to when they’re not competing! Besides, we can still watch the BBC coverage we recorded and look out for our 10 seconds of fame somewhere in the crowd.

Thanks to Abi for inviting us along and for providing amusement by scaling a fence, in a dress, to secrete the bottle of wine we’d brought her in the long grass of the park whilst we were inside the track.
