have you tried overlaying the forwards and backwards 6 ponds routes to see
how similar they are? I imagine that they are fairly similar except for the bit
between Candman pond and green pond.

Download the two GPX and load them in to Google Earth and see for yourself. As you say – not much difference between the two routes – 150 metres apart at the most.
