Yesterday we went to the middle distance orienteering event that Petr was controlling for his club OK Jilemnice. It was a national competition for elite competitors and a regional competition for others. We had both entered elite. The area (called Omega after the building on the map) was steep and littered with rock features. This didn’t bode well for me as I’m not the most aggressive of runners at the best of times. With 23 controls any navigational errors soon added up. Suffice is to say that I ended up ten minutes down on the rest of the elite field and even Christine was two minutes behind the penultimate runner on her course.

Czech orienteering failure
Sunday, September 4th, 2005Test Way relay recce
Sunday, August 21st, 2005Christine and I are both running the seventh leg of the Test Way relay for Southampton Running Club in a few weeks time and we made the most of today’s sunshine to run the leg from Romsey to Mottisfont (and back). Should be fun with a good mix of woodland, open fields and some short sections of road.
End of RR10 season
Wednesday, August 17th, 2005Tonight saw the last RR10 of the season. IBM organises the event so I didn’t get to run (I was on first aid duty instead). Unfortunately the final results show that I’ve been pushed down to 16th place in the league – my worst position ever. Even worse, having edged ahead of Christine in the rankings in the previous race, I have now been pushed back in to 22nd place – three places behind her!
Waun Fach fell race
Saturday, August 13th, 2005A trip to visit the in-laws in South Wales gave us a chance to run the Waun Fach fell race – 7 miles and 2000ft of climb. After a dismal morning it did actually stop raining for the start. It was a long hard slog up to the summit and my southerner’s legs slowed to a walk once or twice. Sprinted along the boggy ridge trying not to lose sight of the runner in front of me in the mist. Descents have never been my strong point and he dissapeared as soon as we turned downhill. I was only overtaken by one runner though and finished a creditable 8th in a time of 57’36. Christine was second lady and her Mum first female over-50 so we had a good collection of prize beers when we finally came away from the post-race pub.
Denny Lodge evening event
Thursday, August 11th, 2005Christine had her evening event at Denny Lodge tonight. Only a small turnout (16 people) but then that’s what we’d hoped for given the limited parking. Most importantly, we had lots of help collecting in controls and made it to The Crown Strirrup in time to demolish a very large fish pie.
My last RR10 for 2005
Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005This evening saw the last RR10 of the year for me as the final race is organised by my club. Had a reasonable run round the two laps of Stoke Park Wood although I can still feel the Capricorn in my legs. Took 28:45, finishing in 14th place just ahead of Rob and Eric . Should do my overall rankings a boost though, replacing the 25th position I had in the previous race.
