Waterlogged Burley West

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

688Although Sunday proved to be largely rain free, the previous day’s downpours had left Burley West pretty sodden. I found the M21L course pretty untechnical even by New Forest standards. There seemed to be a preponderance of long legs where straight (sticking to dry land where possible) was best and then ending at control sites near very obvious features.

Sunny Loughrigg

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The reason for our trip to the Lakes was the JOK Champs, AGM and Annual Dinner. The first of these was held on Loughrigg Fell above Ambleside. The sun was breaking through as we arrived and while Christine was out running I had an easy time of looking after Emma as she played with the other JOK kids.

Return to New Forest O

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Today we headed over to Redshoot for the SOC District Event and our first orienteering since returning to the UK. There wouldn’t be time for me to do the Long-O (26km) and for Christine still to get a run in so I settled for the Black course (15km). The navigation wasn’t particularly taxing with the control sites being sufficiently obvious that one could afford to be a bit wayward on compass bearings. The terrain was hard going though, particularly after all the recent rain. After 95 minutes I was therefore perfectly happy not to have to go on to do another 10km.

Weekend in Oslo

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

595We’ve had a fairly quiet weekend at home in Oslo. Christine was sick on Thursday night (food poisoning we reckon although we’re not quite sure from what) and was still recovering. We just went in to town yesterday. We started out at the playground in Aker Brygge although Emma largely ignored this and just walked her buggy up and down instead. Next stop was the tourist information office in the hope that they would help us decide on the route for our summer trip to the west coast. Strangely enough, although very nice, they couldn’t really help in our general indecision between having a relaxing few weeks and cramming in the sights. We walked back home via Frognerparken as the sun was shining by this point.

O-festivalen

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

We’ve spent this weekend competing in the O-festivalen competition held at Siggerud on the outskirts of Oslo (not far from the IBM office). I went to Friday’s middle distance race on my own. It made a pleasant change not having to go off at one end or other of the start block and with minute intervals I was actually able to race round most of the course. It still took me just under 10 mins/k but with only a couple of minutes lost at the first control I was pleased with my run.

Not last at orienteering!

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

We went to Nydalens’ Nydalten event today. This seemed to primarily be about the juniors’ Trimtex Cup match with some courses for adults sandwiched in the middle. Unfortunately this meant that, despite having put us at opposite ends of the start block, we had just 80 minutes for me to get round my 10k course and for Christine to do the 2k to the start. As Christine has kindly pointed out, I failed to do even my part in under 80 minutes and she consequently missed her run.

Linderudkollen

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Our babysitters headed off back home this afternoon so it was Christine’s turn to run at the Nordmarkskarusellen up at Linderudkollen whilst I took Emma out in the back pack. It was a very pleasant evening to be out and about although I picked some rather narrow tracks to try and negotiate with Emma who probably got the odd poke in the side from a pine tree. Christine seems not to have mentioned on her blog that she failed to beat my last place from the previous week. She made the same mistake of taking two controls out of sequence but, unlike me, couldn’t be bothered to correct her error.

Sognsvann Øst

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Yesterday evening we made it out to the Nordmarkskarusellen at Korsvoll school. I went orienteering and then Christine ran home afterwards. My main aim for the evening was just to take it steady and not make any major stuff-ups. I failed!
