The first slot of the day was one of those rare occasions where I wasn’t quite sure what to attend. In the end I opted for Alex Polozoff’s "Large Topology Tactics and Tradeoffs" presentation as I have great respect for his opinions. The emphasis here was not so much on the technology but the processes and the people. Most of it seemed common sense (at least to me) but the presentation should be a useful resource for anyone embarking on large scale WebSphere topologies.

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008Woke every couple of hours in the night but otherwise didn’t sleep too badly and managed to stay in bed until a reasonable time. Perhaps just as well as I was re-presenting my WebSphere ESB pitch first thing. Thankfully I hadn’t been given quite such a large stage to stand on this time! Some good questions from the audience to keep me on my toes.
Return to Vegas
Monday, May 5th, 2008It’s that time of year when IBM’s WebSphere Services and Support organisation (plus a whole host of interlopers) descend on Las Vegas for our annual technical conference. As usual, I didn’t take up the opportunity of spending more time here than is absolutely necessary and flew out yesterday. Norway doesn’t have the luxury of direct flights so I flew Continental from Oslo to Newark and from there to Vegas. The first flight was probably only half full which was a nice luxury. Sadly, it arrived an hour early and the flight to Vegas departed over an hour late so I had over six hours to kill at Newark and didn’t arrive at the Rio in Vegas until about half eleven.

Performance tuning WebSphere ESB 6.1
Monday, January 28th, 2008There is a Redpaper which provides some excellent advice when it comes to tuning WebSphere ESB 6.0.2 for performance. However, you’ll have to wait a little bit for the Version 6.1 update. In the meantime, whilst all of the current best practice still stands, I thought I would post a couple of additional tips that are specific to the latest release.

WebSphere ESB Version 6.1 installation
Thursday, January 24th, 2008I thought I’d post a few notes based on some experiences installing a network deployment environment of WebSphere ESB Version 6.1.

Flat file custom data bindings
Monday, October 22nd, 2007Having written a very similar exercise for the Connecting Enterprise Application to WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus ITSO Workshop, it was interesting to read Rich Johnson’s article on creating custom data bindings for the WebSphere Flat File adapter. In particular, the step required to actually add the custom data binding so that it shows up in the Enterprise Service Discovery wizard is not exactly obvious.
Job ad
Tuesday, October 16th, 2007Couldn’t help laughing at this job ad for a “WebSphere ESB Developer”. On closer inspection said developer needs “proven experience of WebSphere Message Broker V6” i.e. the “Advanced Enterprise Service Bus”!
Aggregation with WebSphere ESB
Friday, August 17th, 2007Aggregation isn’t currently one of the capabilities available out of the box with WebSphere ESB but it’s something a number of people have asked me about in the past, particularly those from a WebSphere Message Broker background. I was therefore particularly pleased when Russ Butek showed me a draft of a developerWorks article he was putting together which demonstrated how to achieve aggregation using a custom mediation primitive. Looks like that article has now been published so you can now read all about it for yourselves.
