Thursday @ WSTC

May 8th, 2008

Went along to see my UK colleague Andy Piper‘s presentation on "Using Social Software to Improve Your Effectiveness at Work". Andy’s an engaging speaker and his presentation was well thought out and put together. As a result I signed up for a twitter account but we’ll have to wait and see whether it gets much use let alone improving my effectiveness at work. It did also prompt me to revisit an internal file sharing tool which, having previously not realised that access could be restricted, I had discarded as much of the material I want to share is of a confidential nature.

Wednesday @ WSTC

May 8th, 2008

The first slot of the day was one of those rare occasions where I wasn’t quite sure what to attend. In the end I opted for Alex Polozoff’s "Large Topology Tactics and Tradeoffs" presentation as I have great respect for his opinions. The emphasis here was not so much on the technology but the processes and the people. Most of it seemed common sense (at least to me) but the presentation should be a useful resource for anyone embarking on large scale WebSphere topologies.

Tuesday @ WSTC

May 6th, 2008

Woke every couple of hours in the night but otherwise didn’t sleep too badly and managed to stay in bed until a reasonable time. Perhaps just as well as I was re-presenting my WebSphere ESB pitch first thing. Thankfully I hadn’t been given quite such a large stage to stand on this time! Some good questions from the audience to keep me on my toes.

Return to Vegas

May 5th, 2008

It’s that time of year when IBM’s WebSphere Services and Support organisation (plus a whole host of interlopers) descend on Las Vegas for our annual technical conference. As usual, I didn’t take up the opportunity of spending more time here than is absolutely necessary and flew out yesterday. Norway doesn’t have the luxury of direct flights so I flew Continental from Oslo to Newark and from there to Vegas. The first flight was probably only half full which was a nice luxury. Sadly, it arrived an hour early and the flight to Vegas departed over an hour late so I had over six hours to kill at Newark and didn’t arrive at the Rio in Vegas until about half eleven.

Active week

May 2nd, 2008

It’s been an active week so far. Tuesday night was an Oslo City Cup race at Godliaparken on the west side of Oslo. A 1:5000 sprint race map again with a mix of fast woodland and open areas around the school and flats. My biggest mistake of the night was at the third control where I was a bit to the right. This cost me a whole 23 seconds but was enough for the guy who started 15 seconds behind me to catch up. I then spent the rest of the race desperately clinging on – my legs tired from two hilly runs at the weekend – only staying in touch by avoiding his small mistakes. Although only less than three minutes down on the winner, I’m still in the middle of the results. I think I’d be pushing it to run 3km in 13 minutes in terrain even if I didn’t have to find 19 controls!

Cornwall to Oslo

April 23rd, 2008

As the weather showed no signs of settling down we decided to leave Cornwall a day early and spend a day at my parents, popping in to visit my Uncle in Devon on the way past. Cornwall to Hertfordshire isn’t a drive I’d normally like to make in a day but the Vectra’s cruise control meant the M5, M4, M25 and M1 all slide past without too much pain. It proved to be the right decision as we had a wonderfully sunny day at my parents. We were able to sit outside on the lawn and, after patting it experimentally for about twenty minutes, Emma eventually decided that grass was safe to crawl on! Emma also made the most of being back in a house and proceeded to ascend the stairs two or three times.

Ian and Sarah wed

April 20th, 2008

523After much feverish preparation masterminded by the bride’s Mum the day of the big wedding finally dawned. The sky was overcast but the wind had turned as promised and there was no longer a danger of the marquee disappearing over the cliff! Ian had laid on a surf lesson in the morning and eight hardy souls appeared at the appointed time. I took Emma along to spectate whilst I took some photos. The waves at nearby Praa Sands were just right for beginners (or so I’m told) and a few managed to get vertical on their boards if only for a short time.

Oslo to Cornwall

April 16th, 2008

520After work on Tuesday we set off on the long journey from Oslo to Cornwall for the wedding of my brother in-law. Things didn’t get off to a good start when, on stopping to fill up our Norwegian hire car with petrol before returning it, I inserted my credit card in the first slot I came to, only milliseconds later to realise that it was where the receipt come out. About twenty minutes later, having tried everything from a coffee stirrer to a pair of cooking tongs to extract the card, the cashier eventually found the right key to unlock the compartment and free my card.
