Sognsvann Øst

May 23rd, 2008

Yesterday evening we made it out to the Nordmarkskarusellen at Korsvoll school. I went orienteering and then Christine ran home afterwards. My main aim for the evening was just to take it steady and not make any major stuff-ups. I failed!

New role as women’s pacemaker

May 21st, 2008

While hunting around for events to enter we came across Sportsklubben Rye’s Ryeløpet. This is a 5k race around Kongeskogen, Bygdøy. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I arrived yesterday evening, half an hour before the appointed time. The online details were a bit scant. I’d made a bank transfer but wasn’t totally convinced I’d even managed to enter successfully.

Farewell russebusser

May 19th, 2008

It was a shame to have to get up early this morning to catch a flight to Stavanger as it must be the first night in a week where we haven’t been woken by a passing russebusser. For the uninitiated, the russ are the Norwegian students about to leave school who for the three weeks or so leading up to National Day are given free reign to rampage across the city. Some of there are activities are benign (for example, the younger kids enjoy collecting the imaginative "calling cards" that the russ hand out) but, fuelled by their first real exposure to large amounts of alcohol, other aspects are less pleasant.

Norwegian Constitution Day

May 17th, 2008

532The 17th May is yet another public holiday in Norway although sadly, this year, a Saturday. This time it is the National Constitution Day, celebrating Norway’s declaration as an independent state in 1814 (although still under Swedish rule). The day is very much targeted at the young and as we ate our breakfast we could see the local children gathering at the school for the raising of the flag. Unfortunately, it was to prove to be the coldest National Day for fifty years and at this point was actually snowing!

Sunny Stavanger

May 16th, 2008

I’ve been in Stavanger the past two days for a meeting and, despite the city’s reputation for rain, mostly we’ve just had gorgeous sunshine. Both the meeting and our accommodation has been at the Hummeren Hotel. Hummeren translates as lobster which probably gives you a clue that it is located on the waterfront and, during breaks, we have enjoyed sitting outside on the sun soaked decking looking out over the bay, sheltered from both the wind and views of the local oil industry.

Norsk Folkemuseum

May 12th, 2008

529Whit Monday is a public holiday in Norway and, as the weather was set to be fair, we decided to do some outdoors tourism at the Norwegian Folk Museum. This is an open-air museum with 150+ buildings from various different parts of Norwegian history transported to the site. Perhaps the most famous of this is the large wooden stave church.

Holmenkollstafetten

May 11th, 2008

Over lunch at the IBM office one day I had managed to get myself on to the reserve list for the Software Group team for Holmenkollstafetten. This is an annual 15 person relay around the streets of Oslo which, with a total distance of just 18km, manages to attract a massive entry. If you live in Oslo and are not running yourself you almost certainly know someone who is. As predicted, the drop out rate in our team was pretty high and in the week beforehand I was called up.

Vegas to Oslo

May 10th, 2008

It wasn’t a good sign to arrive at the airport and discover those from the earlier flight to Newark still sat trying to sleep at the gate. Weather (presumably bad) in the New York area was the reason given for the delays. We eventually boarded the plan about ninety minutes late but, having pushed back from the gate, then had to wait another half an hour to be allocated a take-off slot. This was all particularly annoying as a) the aircraft was packed full and b) it was so new that they hadn’t got round to fitting any entertainment system yet! The time passed quickly enough though as I practiced some Norwegian vocab on my laptop and then read.
