Last run from Rufus Stone

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

In a break with tradition, tonight’s run will be the last from Rufus Stone this year as the venue can’t really support five different runs. With a bumper attendance, Neil ably led us round a triangle(ish) containing Ocknell Inclosure. On this occasion we managed to stay out of the re-enterants on the North edge of the Inclosure and remarkably we were back at Rufus Stone with time (and daylight) to spare. In case Mike’s memory fails him (!) I should probably say that we ran round clockwise.

Sunny Loughrigg

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The reason for our trip to the Lakes was the JOK Champs, AGM and Annual Dinner. The first of these was held on Loughrigg Fell above Ambleside. The sun was breaking through as we arrived and while Christine was out running I had an easy time of looking after Emma as she played with the other JOK kids.

Holey smoke

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

I took Friday afternoon off so that we could get a head start on the crowds heading up to the Lake District. I successfully anticipated that the oil warning light would come on and we had already purchased the requisite supplies. Unfortunately after about an hour it became clear that there was growing noise coming from the exhaust. Not withstanding sounding like a boy racer, this started to give me a splitting headache (hopefully not due to petrol fumes!). Consequently, as things started to slow up as we approached Birmingham I was happy to fork out £4.50 to take the M6 toll road – a first for me – which also gave us the option of another set of services (Norton Canes).

Disappearing remote desktop connection bar

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Whilst still awaiting my replacement laptop I’ve been working in a VMware image on a spare blade server accessed via Remote Desktop. The idea being that when my laptop finally turns up I can just continue using the image there. For some reason the connection bar at the top of my remote desktop session keeps vanishing. I don’t mean that it’s just hidden – no amount of mouse wiggling can make it reappear. Fortunately, with the aid of a list of keyboard shortcuts, I can now toggle between full screen and windowed modes and hence escape a session.

Search parties

We were missing all of usual navigators on last night’s run (after 10 years I’m still learning the ropes!) and the route suffered a bit as a result. Things started off okay as Neil found the golf course without too much trouble and from there it’s an easy route to Janesmoor Pond. We struggled a bit finding a good line to Cadnams Pond and popped out on the road far too early (although I was sufficiently confused by this point to think we might have overshot). There was then yet more confusion about the location of Ocknell Pond and the route we should take to the campsite (we ended up half way between the path route and the high and dry route i.e. undulating through numerous marshy re-entrants). We eventually found our way back to Rufus Stone though in around 75 minutes and semi-darkness.

Beale Park amusement

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

667We were visiting friends near Reading on Saturday and, at their suggestion, we all headed over to Beale Park for the day. Described as a “Wildlife Park and Gardens” it was soon clear that, in reality, the park contains almost anything that might be described as an amusement: from paddling pool to piggery, from gardens to goats and from trains to lemurs (sorry – the alliteration broke down on the third attempt!). As with many places of this size, you worry a bit about the welfare of the animals and, with some cages not labelled at all, you even wonder about the educational benefit. However, all in all, both adults and child enjoyed the day out.

Shipping arrives

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Whoopee – our shipping finally arrived yesterday – a mere four weeks after it was collected in Oslo! It’s amazing how much you miss some really small things. For example, with our weighing scales back we can now start making bread again. (Christine tried guessing weights once and the result wasn’t pretty!) We also have our wireless router back (no more fighting over the internet connection) and Emma has more toys than she knows what to do with (not to mention a cot). Only negative: this morning Christine spotted a couple of inch long slashes in the high chair where it looks like someone has been a bit heavy-handed taking the wrappings off with a Stanley knife. Hopefully it’ll be covered by the insurance.
