Dining out in Monmouth

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

We’re in Monmouth for the weekend visiting the in-laws and, to celebrate Christine’s imminent birthday, we went out for dinner at a new restaurant named Bistro Prego. This was only their third night so the service was a little random (the third bottle of wine to arrive at our table was the one intended for us, the waitress was unsure as to what some items on the menu actually were, and we sent the bill back as they’d missed off a few items). This is, perhaps, forgivable as I suspect Monmouth doesn’t have a particularly large pool of trained serving staff to call upon! The food, however, was absolutely superb.

Christine’s Mum and I started with a warm asparagus salad with fennel and chickpea fritters, which was very well presented. Christine had the herring on bruschetta and her Dad the braseola (home cured beef). I followed my salad with pheasant with chesnuts and, slightly bizarrely (although it did work well), noodles. Other selections on our table included rabbit lasagne, stuffed aubergine and a nice thick slab of porchetta. The servings were generous but, given the hit rate so far, I forced down the lemon and pine nut torte which didn’t disappoint.

If you’re ever in the vicinity I’d highly recommend stopping in.

Performance, adapters and food

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Busy day today. Sweated off the remainder of the last night’s alcohol with a morning run. After grabbing a bite to eat (and having another interesting breakfast-time conversation with a colleague) I went to Luc Maquil’s presentation on WebSphere Process Server performance. Luc is one of the authors of the WebSphere Business Integration V6 Performance Tuning Redpaper and consequently knows a thing or two about the subject.

Presentation and dinner

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Many of the presentations at the conference are repeats from our internal services conference earlier this year which means I have some spare time to catch up on other work. One session I did go to today was Eric Herness (Chief Architect for WebSphere Business Integration) presenting the new content in Version 6.0.2 of WebSphere Process Service and ESB. I think it’s safe to say this is a refresh pack with more than a few functional enhancements!

The good loaf

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

We have finally retired our Kenwood Rapid Bake breadmaker after many years of frequent use. The bearing in our second replacement bread pan had disintegrated in the same way as the first and the whole machine was making such a racket that it was no longer possible to put it on overnight. After a whole ten minutes research we plumped for the Panasonic SD253 currently retailing for £80 on Amazon (a lot less than the Kenwood cost originally). From the two loaves we’ve had so far I’d rate the Panasonic pretty highly. We have a greater choice of loaf sizes than with the Kenwood and the paddle leaves less of a hole in the bread. Bake times seem to be longer than for the old machine but this isn’t a problem as we can once again leave the machine on overnight. Indeed, it’s so quiet you can sit next to it and barely know that it’s on. Just have to work out why the nut dispenser didn’t drop seeds in to the last loaf…

Greek dining

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

Conveniently the project leader for the education I have been delivering in Raleigh this week also runs a Greek restaurant with her husband. Xios proved to be a very stylish venue. Phil and I shared the Nenita option off the specials menu which was both extremely appetising and very filling.
