Emma’s first birthday

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

541It seems like a lifetime ago that Emma was born. Well it was – her lifetime. But that lifetime only reached one year yesterday. With Christine’s parents here we were able to have a bit of birthday tea and, in keeping with Norwegian tradition, flew the Norwegian flag outside our apartment. I’m fairly sure Emma didn’t have a clue what was going on but she loved the attention.

Cabin fever

Monday, May 26th, 2008

535Christine’s parents arrived at the end of the last week and this weekend we all decamped to a hytte that we hired on the coast not far from Fredrikstad. The accommodation was basic (no running water and a compost toilet) but still very comfortable. From what we could understand from the (Danish) owner in his broken English, it is probably hired out for less than a month each year and is used by himself for the rest of the time.

Norwegian Constitution Day

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

532The 17th May is yet another public holiday in Norway although sadly, this year, a Saturday. This time it is the National Constitution Day, celebrating Norway’s declaration as an independent state in 1814 (although still under Swedish rule). The day is very much targeted at the young and as we ate our breakfast we could see the local children gathering at the school for the raising of the flag. Unfortunately, it was to prove to be the coldest National Day for fifty years and at this point was actually snowing!

Ian and Sarah wed

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

523After much feverish preparation masterminded by the bride’s Mum the day of the big wedding finally dawned. The sky was overcast but the wind had turned as promised and there was no longer a danger of the marquee disappearing over the cliff! Ian had laid on a surf lesson in the morning and eight hardy souls appeared at the appointed time. I took Emma along to spectate whilst I took some photos. The waves at nearby Praa Sands were just right for beginners (or so I’m told) and a few managed to get vertical on their boards if only for a short time.

Sunny walk to Ullevålseter

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

511To make up for last weekend’s snow bound picture, I thought I’d post another snowy one, only this time with the sun shining too. On Saturday morning we drove round to Hammeren on the North edge of Maridalsvannet (vann is water so that’s a lake). We then walked up the snowy path through the trees to the hut at UllevÃ¥lsetter. Unfortunately the clouds came over whilst we were sat outside enjoying our lunch and hot chocolate so we made a rapid retreat back down the road (the route everyone else seemed to be taking anyway).

Wet weekend

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

505It was pretty damp in Oslo over the weekend. We decided to brave the elements all the same and on Saturday morning packed Emma up in the baby carrier and set out for a walk. This started out on the, by now, slushy footpaths around home but as we headed up past Midtstuen the rain turned to snow. We didn’t really have a plan but decided to aim for Frognersetern and get the T-Bane back home.

Shipping arrived

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Hooray – our shipping was finally delivered on Tuesday. Christine had most of it unpacked by the time I got home from work and we’ve now found somewhere to store the majority of the bits and pieces although there is a rather large pile of flattened cardboard boxes peeking out from under the bed. Let’s hope that doesn’t constitute a fire hazard! Mealtimes are now relatively civilised again with Emma in her high-chair and she is also glad to have her baby bath back having never really taken to showering!

Moving the family

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

We were up early (if not bright) on Monday morning with Eastleigh Area Cars arriving at seven to take us to the airport. (They would take our child seat back to their Chandler’s Ford office from where a friend would then pick it up.) They hadn’t taken the hint about the amount of luggage we would have and it took fifteen minutes to shoe-horn it in to the taxi. The M3 was pretty busy around Winchester as it always is at this time of day. The taxi driver, however, seemingly hadn’t noticed the warning sign for an accident at junction 3 and was surprised when we joined a slow moving queue around 4a. He then told us he didn’t really know the back roads and his road atlas was buried in the boot. Fortunately Christine managed to extract my sat-nav (review still to come) and that took us across to the M4 and in to Heathrow.
