Victory in France

Monday, April 17th, 2006

64Today saw the exciting climax of our Easter holiday orienteering with the third and final day of the 3 jours du Sud-Ouest taking place on the coastal dunes west of Bordeaux. Going into the chase I was lying in second place on H21A by 1:49 having won the second day with an (almost) clean run. In third place was Matthias Mahr over whom I had a five-minute lead.

CompassSport Cup first round

Sunday, April 9th, 2006

Competing again today, this time at the first round of the inter-club orienteering competition. The area (Black Park near Slough) held some promise with the details claiming only 30m climb for an 8km course! Unfortunately, what they failed to mention were the brambles which had a hold over parts of the area and, at times, my legs.

National Road Relays

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

61Christine and I were drafted in at the last minute to represent Southampton at the National Road Relays in Sutton Park today. There are 12 legs for the men and 6 for the women. I was on 12th and consequently, after a flying start from Andy Morgan-Lee, had nearly 4 hours to kill before my 3 miles of glory. When the moment eventually came (narrowly missing the mass start) it decided to start hailing!

Help the aged

Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

52I hadn’t entered the British Relays as I was originally due to be out in the US for two weeks. The club captain had pencilled me in to fill a space on an M50 team but, when we eventually arrived at the assembly area after the usual car park fiasco, I discovered I’d been promoted to the M40 team.

Jet lag champs

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

49My pre-race preparation for the British Champs wasn’t exactly ideal. My flight from Raleigh landed at Gatwick at around 8:15 in the morning giving me just enough time to get home, get changed and get back to Midhurst for a start time six hours later.

Bubba Goat blunders

Monday, March 27th, 2006

46Back in Raleigh North Carolina next week with work so came out a day early to participate in the Backwoods Orienteering Klub Bubba Goat event. For the unitiated, this involved a mass start, a one control fork (where you decide which fork to take) and the chance to miss out one control of your choosing.

Grizzly Survivor

Monday, March 13th, 2006

43Ran the Grizzly yesterday and survived! The twentyish odd miles from Seaton to Weston and back was reduced to about 18.5 due to a recent landslide but this was made up for by the general dampness and bitterly cold wind. Although running in shorts, I did start wearing two Hellys, a Goretex and gloves.

Burley West Long-O

Sunday, March 5th, 2006

Took part in the Wimborne Long-O in the New Forest today. At the start the sun was shining but there was a chill breeze blowing across the open moor. The navigation wasn’t particularly technical and the only major mistake I made was at the third control. I’d just spotted Christine and must have run straight past the control in my haste to catch her up. Took me a while to figure out that I had gone too far down the hill.
