191We drove down to Land’s End today with Ian and Sarah. Parked at Sennen Cove and walked over the cliff tops to the hotel. Having just finished reading Eats, Shoots and Leaves it was disappointing to see that the tourist sign read “Lands End”! Avoided most of the theme park rubbish although the old trawler on display proved quite interesting.

197Today we headed over to the Eden Project, meeting up with the rest of my family who are on holiday in Dorset. We started by touring around the outdoor exhibits. Undoubtedly Autumn is not the right time of year to visit these as the flowers were mostly past their best and many of the beds had already been cleared. I could have been tempted to try the overhead zip-wire (not sure how this is meant to be educational) although it later turned out this costs an extra £10!

182We’re down visiting my brother in law and his girlfriend who’ve recently moved to the small village of Porthtowan, midway between St Ives and Newquay on the north Cornwall coast. We were due a surfing lesson but Hurricane Gordon, although out in the mid-Atlantic, was still making 12ft waves here. This didn’t deter Ian though (perhaps due to an earlier blow to the head from a surfboard?!) and after investigating various beaches up the coast as far as Holywell Bay he settled on St Agnes. (Note that the black blob on the beach in the photo is a prone surfer not a seal! The black blobs in the sky are a result of me not cleaning dust off the camera sensor!)

176179We had guests visiting for the weekend which was a perfect excuse to head over to nearby Hillier Gardens. Somehow, despite having lived in the area for nearly eight years, we’ve never made it there before. It’s undoubtedly not their most colourful time of the year but the Art in the Garden exhibition more than made up for that. There are more than 150 pieces of sculpture scattered throughout the grounds and we whiled a good few hours wandering around. The lush green gardens certainly provided an excellent backdrop for my photographic efforts (although the sun wasn’t co-operating). The exhibition continues until the end of October and I’d highly recommend a visit.

170I’ve had the pleasure of spending the past week in the city of Linköping in southern Sweden. I flew out via Copenhagen, transferring to a Skyways aircraft for the final hour’s journey to the tiny local airport. This is owned by SAAB whose adjacent aircraft factory, opened in 1937, is undoubtedly what propelled (if you’ll excuse the pun) Linköping to become Sweden’s fifth largest city.

As promised, I went along to the IBM meeting in Second Life (SL) yesterday evening. I was first struck by how closely the experience imitated real life. I turned up at the last minute having rushed away from dinner with a customer and was quickly ushered in to an auditorium. It seems that there is a limit to the number of people who can fit on any one island so the 130 attendees were distributed across four venues. Unfortunately the ‘projector’ was broken in our room, leaving us with just the live soundtrack for the presentation.

164An early start this morning to help hang controls for the SOC district event at Redshoot. Although initially chilly, it turned in to a gloriously sunny day – just perfect for sitting around on first aid duty and taking the odd photo here and there! Unfortunately there were a few competitors who needed patching up after colliding with the ground or tress but thankfully nothing too serious.

Though it was about time I upgraded the various technologies running this blog. After a few heartstopping moments where nothing worked, I’m now successfully running Gallery 2.1 and WordPress 2.0.4 with WPG2 2.0 tying the two together along with the newest WordPress Gallery theme. There’s probably not much to see for the viewer but WPG2 was certainly easier to setup this time and the TinyMCE plugin now lets you add wpg2id tags which is bonus.
I’ve also added the remote module to Gallery so that I can now used Gallery Remote to ease the process of uploading photos.
