Flying Field

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

It was Hants Cross Country on Saturday and, after a bit of indecision caused by my cold and Christine’s gentle return to running, we decided to make the most of Christine’s parents being around to child mind and run. Christine didn’t get much of a warm-up as she was needed to assist me with the removal of poo from all the way up Duncan’s back, Christine’s parent having conveniently taken Emma off to look at the planes (the event being held at Popham Airfield near Micheldever Station). She had a respectable run though and was no-where near the back of the field which is where she would have had you believe that she would be.

DynaCache and WebSphere ESB/Process Server

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Building WebSphere ESB and Process Server on WebSphere Application Server means that they benefit from the scalability, reliability, transactionality and security of the underlying platform. Another advantage is that you, as a developer, have access to all of the underlying capabilities of the application server. In a recent article, Alan Hopkins (Dr Alan to you apparently!) demonstrated the use of the object cache to provide a shared variable between two modules. On a similar vein, another UK ISSW consultant Gabriel Telerman has just published a detailed tutorial describing how to use DynaCache from an SCA Java component to improve performance in a WebSphere ESB or Process Server environment. Now Gaby, can I have that pint now for the plug?

Circular start to Sainsburys

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Being the first Tuesday of the month, it had to be a trip to Sainsburys, but we were missing Peter and Neil for Tuesday’s run (who would normally provide direction). Andy and myself were at the front as we crossed the Avenue and, for some reason, I let Andy turn us left and was then happy to take the next right. This meant we got to do an extra circuit (and hill) before rejoining the normal route at the sports centre. No harm done though. Towards the end, Stuart made the fatal statement “it’s actually not a bad night for running” at which point it started raining.

Stormy Southsea

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

806Christine’s cousin was down at the weekend with her family and, having noted the rain on the forecast, we decided to head over to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Portsmouth on Saturday. What we’d failed to realise, until we heard a traffic announcement as we left home, was that the rain was to be accompanied by gale force winds! The M27 was an interesting drive as the car was buffetted about but the seafront at Southsea was quite something else. We arrived just before lunchtime and sat in the aquarium cafe (whose speciality seemed to be that well known Italian dish, panini and chips) watching the waves break over the sea wall. They then proceeded to close the section of road we had just driven along!

Two’s Company

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

There was chaos on the M27 Eastbound yesterday evening and as a result routes in to Southampton were also snarled up. Unfortunately, the only other person who knew that I was intending to run was held up in the same traffic. Arriving 10 minutes late the group had already departed but thankfully I spotted Sam as I was driving in and we went for a run together. We mostly did the Itchen Bridge route although, making the most of there being just two of us, we came back via the stadium rather than the usual route up the avenue so that Sam could cut-off home.

Bonfires don’t go bang

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Emma was pretty tired after our day out but, as I had to go in to Winchester anyway to pick up Christine’s cousin, we decided to offer her the opportunity to go and see the torch lit parade and bonfire in Winchester, safe in the knowledge that, in the half hour between the lighting of the bonfire and the start of the fireworks, we could return home and avoid a repeat of Thursday night. Having checked that bonfires don’t go bang, Emma said that she would like to go.

Long Lepe

803Having failed to renew our annual membership of Hillier Gardens (we just tend to do so on our next visit), we noticed with interest an advert for Hampshire County Council’s Culture-all Passport when at Royal Victoria Country Park last weekend. This entitles two adults (at least one of whom must be named on the card) and two children, free entry to any of the Council’s attractions. This includes Hilliers and another local favourite, Manor Farm Country Park, as well as some attractions further afield which we thought might provide for useful distraction e.g. the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke. Perhaps equally important, it gives you free parking at all of the Country Parks owned by the Council.

Firework Flop

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Yesterday night we headed along to the firework display at our local school (Hiltingbury). The buggy board we had ordered also arrived earlier in the day. Emma was so excited – she rode on the buggy board the whole way there shouting “We’re going to the fireworks” to anyone who would listen. Christine and I were in a slightly less ecstatic mood having failed to find Christine’s wallet, hoping that she had left it in the post office earlier in the day. We had a bit of a wait before the action started and Emma amused herself with a glo-stick. Emma was up on my shoulders when the fireworks started and the reaction was immediate: sheer terror. She started screaming that she wanted to go home and had to be carried away from the school. Last year, having seen a few fireworks out the bathroom window, Emma kept asking about them for weeks afterwards but it would seem that she’s just not ready for the loud bangs.
