I’ve largely given up posting links to interesting content on this site – see my delicious feed for that. However, many of my original posts related to messaging and WebSphere Application Server and hence I suspect a reasonable proportion of those who stumble across this site are interested in that subject. Consequently, I feel it’s appropriate to advertise the new WebSphere Application Server V7 Messaging Administration Guide. This document covers both the default messaging provider and WebSphere MQ support. Don’t be misled by the title – although it does provide detailed information on the administration of resources, the background information on concepts and topologies is equally relevant to developers and architects. The document also has a good section on securing the default messaging provider.

Messaging Administration Guide
Wednesday, July 15th, 2009Splitting up is easy to do
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009To continue a recent theme, I got wet again tonight when running from Godshill. Neil led the way with map in hand so we could weave an intricate route around the local footpaths and roads. There was a minor revolt when, having just climbed to the top of the hill, Neil disappeared off down to the River Avon again. Neil and Roderick did actually manage to make it back to the car before us but then they did have a map!
Damp Dorset
Saturday, July 11th, 2009Anderwood BBQ
Saturday, July 11th, 2009Thanks to Sam Massey for organising a good evening’s entertainment yesterday for SOC. Unfortunately there was a heavy downpour as we approached Anderwood which soaked the BBQ area but the weather then improved. Sam had put on a 45 minute score event with a handicap scheme that meant that the old/young had to get less controls. Sadly that meant I had to try and get all 20. In winter it may have been achievable but the head high bracken (which was also soaking wet in to the bargain) proved too much of an impediment and I only managed 19. The handicapping worked well with lots of different ages getting an adjusted 18-20 controls. Tamsin Moran was the winner having got her 14 controls with time to spare. The subsequent BBQ also went well although it was a shame there weren’t more members present. I dread to think quite how many sausages Emma ate!
Moving experience
Friday, July 10th, 2009On Wednesday we finally moved house! There were only 3 properties and 4 parties involved, none of whom were being particularly obstructive, but it took an age to reach completion. I don’t think there was any point where I considered that it would all fall through but I did sometimes wonder whether we’d ever reach the end!
Windows disk confusion
Friday, July 3rd, 2009I wasn’t best pleased this morning to find that I couldn’t log on to my laptop. I’d get as far as the logon prompt at which point any key press would cause everything to freeze. The only other noticeable effect was that the backdrop was missing. Safe mode made no difference but I could boot happily off a Linux Live CD. Needless to say a call to IBM’s European Service Center (which most certainly isn’t in Europe) was suitably frustrating. Why, given my serial number, they can’t work out where I am and what my machine, is I’ll never know. I guess I should just be grateful that at least there was an option not to have any music whilst on hold!
Memorial run
Friday, July 3rd, 2009A belated report on the last run of the month from Beaulieu Road. This is perhaps one of the nicest loops from this venue and on Tuesday we chose to run round it clockwise. About half way round the run we stopped for a breather at the Carter memorial. For some reason we’ve previously attributed this to a horse killed during a hunt but for the first time someone spotted that it was, in fact, “S Carter” which would seem to be a more appropriate name for a two legged animal. The only reference on the internet I can find is this photo so I’d be interested if anyone knows any more of the history.
Connection timeout on web service import
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009Here’s a short write-up of the answer to a question I was posed by a colleague yesterday: how do you set the timeout for a web service import? The answer, as any good consultant would say, is that it depends…
