Second place in photo comp

Friday, July 24th, 2009

I try to get an entry in to the monthly competition for the photo club at work. The standard is pretty high now as can be seen by the competition winners and I was therefore pleased to come second in last month’s competition. It’s just slightly annoying that it was in a month where I was really struggling to find anything worthy of submission! In the end, I had to crop this shot of two roses right down to get my entry. That said, it’s nearly the end of July and I have taken almost no photos. I’ll have to try and get out with the camera at some point in the next week (when it’s not raining!)…

Janesmoor RR10

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Tonight’s RR10 was out in the New Forest at Janesmoor Pond. The race started at a fast pace along the gravel tracks through the inclosure. My left knee was continuing to give me grief, particularly when trying to stride out on the downhills. There was too much gravel for my liking with only a short detour along a muddy ride in the middle (which is probably what most of the rest of the field complained about) and then the last climb back up the hill towards the pond offering a respite from the pounding. I’d hoped to be able to do some overtaking on that last incline but, despite having four runners lined up in front of me, I had nothing left in my legs and was overtaken by one other runner. I still finished in 18th place which is my best position so far this year.

Cycle taxi

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Christine was attending a graduation ceremony today so I agreed to collect Emma from nursery. Christine is now taking the car in to work so this meant transporting Emma on the back of my bike. This seemed like a good idea at the time but sadly the weather forecast was as reliable as usual and, rather than rain arriving in the evening, it had been tipping it down all afternoon. It’s now about 10 minutes cycling home and then about 15 minutes each way to the nursery (faster on the way there, slower when carrying Emma!). The rain eased off as I arrived at the nursery but we didn’t make it home before another shower came through. Emma seemed to enjoy it but I was more than happy not to head out in the rain again for a run.

Messaging Administration Guide

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

I’ve largely given up posting links to interesting content on this site – see my delicious feed for that. However, many of my original posts related to messaging and WebSphere Application Server and hence I suspect a reasonable proportion of those who stumble across this site are interested in that subject. Consequently, I feel it’s appropriate to advertise the new WebSphere Application Server V7 Messaging Administration Guide. This document covers both the default messaging provider and WebSphere MQ support. Don’t be misled by the title – although it does provide detailed information on the administration of resources, the background information on concepts and topologies is equally relevant to developers and architects. The document also has a good section on securing the default messaging provider.

Splitting up is easy to do

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

To continue a recent theme, I got wet again tonight when running from Godshill. Neil led the way with map in hand so we could weave an intricate route around the local footpaths and roads. There was a minor revolt when, having just climbed to the top of the hill, Neil disappeared off down to the River Avon again. Neil and Roderick did actually manage to make it back to the car before us but then they did have a map!

Damp Dorset

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

771Today was the annual Dorset Coast Path Relay laid on ostensibly to raise funds for the South-West Junior Squad. The idea is to run the length of the South-West Coast Path within the county of Dorset (so Lyme Regis to Sandbanks) in as quick as time as possible using as many people as you can muster. This year numbers were down both in the SOC team and overall with only 5 teams entering. It was an early start and our car only arrived in Lyme Regis just in time for me to jump out and run up the hill to ensure that Ian Moran was in place. We then dashed over to the other side of the town to give the Morans a hand up the hill on the other side.

Anderwood BBQ

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Thanks to Sam Massey for organising a good evening’s entertainment yesterday for SOC. Unfortunately there was a heavy downpour as we approached Anderwood which soaked the BBQ area but the weather then improved. Sam had put on a 45 minute score event with a handicap scheme that meant that the old/young had to get less controls. Sadly that meant I had to try and get all 20. In winter it may have been achievable but the head high bracken (which was also soaking wet in to the bargain) proved too much of an impediment and I only managed 19. The handicapping worked well with lots of different ages getting an adjusted 18-20 controls. Tamsin Moran was the winner having got her 14 controls with time to spare. The subsequent BBQ also went well although it was a shame there weren’t more members present. I dread to think quite how many sausages Emma ate!

Moving experience

Friday, July 10th, 2009

On Wednesday we finally moved house! There were only 3 properties and 4 parties involved, none of whom were being particularly obstructive, but it took an age to reach completion. I don’t think there was any point where I considered that it would all fall through but I did sometimes wonder whether we’d ever reach the end!
