Fairwell to Fritham

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Tuesday was our last run of the month and, as is tradition, we ran the route that almost everyone can do with their eyes closed: the Six Ponds. It was a lovely evening and a shame that we didn’t have a bigger turnout. In particular, we were treated to a fantastic moon on exiting the pub. It was slightly odd to be joined by someone who we used to coach orienteering to as a junior, haven’t seen for about 4 years, and is now a student at Southampton. Needless to stay his young legs fared him well!

Not the Bramble Hill Hotel

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

This week’s Tuesday night run was described to me as the “Neil’s Wedding Run”. It was meant to take in the Bramble Hill Hotel but somehow we didn’t quite find it and ended up retracing our steps along an admittedly very nice ridge. We did, however, manage to regain our intended route later and hence, had it really been the prelude to Neil’s wedding, to the point where we would have received our champagne. We had to make do with beer from the Royal Oak instead!

Telegraph Hill

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

I finally made it out in to the Forest on a Tuesday evening and was treated to the Telegraph Hill run from Fritham. I chatted to Sam most of the way round (he’s on loan to a different area at work so I don’t see him every day at the moment) and the time seemed to fly by. Think I’m going to have to remember to curb my crisp eating afterwards though!

Last outing of the winter

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

It being the last Tuesday before the clocks change, we met early to get a trip out to Lordswood before it got too dark. Given the weather conditions I’m not sure we succeeded as it was fairly dark in the woods and certainly muddy. Still, it was good fun and it meant I could get back home in time for bedtime stories. Roll on the New Forest…

Lordsdale Greenway

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Having put on my new road shoes for the first time last night it was typical that a route was proposed that, when first run in my absence last year, was apparently ankle deep in mud. The route in question starts by hacking out across to the Common (via the site of Southampton’s Court Leet) and then takes in Hollybrook Cemetery and the Lordsdale Greenway that encircles the Coxford district of Southampton. As well as keeping us off the roads it meant that we got more than the usual level of ‘encouragement’ from local youths! Thankfully it was pretty dry this time round and the trainers came out pretty unscathed. I must remember to tie the laces less tightly next time though as I had pins and needles in my toes for much of the run! An early start next week to take in Lordswood and then we’ll be switching back to the Forest for our runs.

ASDA calls

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Every so often we get bored of running around the streets of Southampton on a Tuesday night and we decide to head north to the delights of Chandler’s Ford. This does, unfortunately, mean a long slog up the Avenue and Bournemouth Road to ASDA but you then get to follow the cycle route to Flemming Park and then cut back through Lakeside Country Park and the University Playing Fields. This time we also took the footpath around the back of the Ford plant which follows Monks Brook which was a new diversion. Not long until the clocks change now…

Damp Sainsburys

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

First Tuesday of the month so it must be a run to Sainsburys. Obviously the runners prefer damp over cold as there was a bumper turnout despite today’s rain.

On the road at Christmas

Friday, January 1st, 2010

815I’m behind on the blog so this post is a catch-all for our activities over the festive period. Having taken the weeks off before and after Christmas we’ve had plenty of time for visiting friends and family and also had a chance to spend a bit of time at home. On the Tuesday before Christmas we set off to visit Christine’s parents in Monmouth (it’s her Dad’s birthday on the 23rd). We failed to check the road conditions before starting out but were intending to stick to the M4 rather than going via Gloucester and through the Forest of Dean. However, we hadn’t been on the M4 for long before we were informed of the closure of the Severn Crossing. We mistakenly decided to continue on in the hope that the old Severn bridge (which we normally use) would still be open, or at least that it would have reopened by the time we got there.
