Drowning in SOA

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Andre Tost has written an article which explains one of the reasons why I never have enough hours in the day. His closing remarks do offer me some hope though!

Narrow escape

Friday, February 9th, 2007

I was meant to spend the second half of this week up in the Midlands on work. Fortunately, on two grounds, I was only up there for Wednesday morning. Firstly, it meant I was safely back home before the snow arrived. Although the couple of centimetres we had here were gone by Thursday lunchtime it sounds like things were a lot more different further North. Secondly, it meant only having to stay one night in the Britannia Hotel Coventry. The hotel itself is pretty decrepit and the blurb seems to major on its proximity to the cathedral, conveniently not mentioning that the other end of the building is perched on top of the bus station with the road passing underneath. One to avoid in future!

Winchester Photo Challenge

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

Yesterday afternoon the Hursley Photo Club hit Winchester for a two hour photo challenge. I made the mistake of starting up at the Great Hall but quickly realised that it was far too dark inside to be shooting without a tripod. Unfortunately it was also pretty grey outside with the blue skies from the morning having clouded over. I wandered down towards the Cathedral where many of the others had congregated. There were some great shots to be had of the Light Division buglers having a fag break outside. Sadly, I wasn’t sufficiently bold to take them (or at least don’t have a sufficiently long lens!).

Faster upload

Friday, December 8th, 2006

I eventually gave up on the 9 hour upload but, with a little help from Adrian, tracked the problem down to my use of sftp. Having switched to ftp the speed shot up five-hundred fold from 200KB/s to 10MB/s bringing the upload time down to just over 10 minutes! Over the IBM intranet I think I can cope with the lack of security for that much an increase in speed.

Performance, adapters and food

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Busy day today. Sweated off the remainder of the last night’s alcohol with a morning run. After grabbing a bite to eat (and having another interesting breakfast-time conversation with a colleague) I went to Luc Maquil’s presentation on WebSphere Process Server performance. Luc is one of the authors of the WebSphere Business Integration V6 Performance Tuning Redpaper and consequently knows a thing or two about the subject.

Sightseeing and SOAP

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

228I wasn’t due to present until late afternoon today so decided to make the most of the bright sunshine and do a little sightseeing. I repeated my route from Monday morning although this time I had to pay to get in to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Some of the internal attractions were a bit naff but the audio tour was worth the wait if only to make it out on to the top tower.

Presentation and dinner

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Many of the presentations at the conference are repeats from our internal services conference earlier this year which means I have some spare time to catch up on other work. One session I did go to today was Eric Herness (Chief Architect for WebSphere Business Integration) presenting the new content in Version 6.0.2 of WebSphere Process Service and ESB. I think it’s safe to say this is a refresh pack with more than a few functional enhancements!

Conference begins

Monday, November 13th, 2006

226Went for a run first thing this morning despite the grey skies outside. I crossed the river from the hotel and climbed the hill opposite, following it along to the fortress. The gates were wide open so I just ran on in. There was no-one around and I just continued on up the steep slope to the fortress terrace, snapping photos as I went. Only when I eventually made my way back down to town had someone appeared in the pay booth at the entrance.
