Jython scripting

January 28th, 2008

I’ve had the pleasure of working with my UKISA colleague Andrew Simms on a number of occasions. Some may have been luck enough to see his “Monty Jython’s Scripting Circus” presentation on the conference circuit recently. If not, fear not, as he now has a developerWorks article to set you on the path to being a Jython pro!

WebSphere ESB Version 6.1 installation

January 24th, 2008

I thought I’d post a few notes based on some experiences installing a network deployment environment of WebSphere ESB Version 6.1.

Lack of connectivity

January 22nd, 2008

I’m staying in the Melia Galgos in Madrid this week. One of the reasons I selected it from the IBM approved list was because it promised internet connectivity. Sadly this hasn’t really proved to be the case. The wired connection in my room stays up just about long enough for me to accept the terms and conditions and what, at the time, seemed to be a very reasonable rate of 8€ for 24 hours. Unfortunately it then proceeds to go up and down randomly every minute or so before eventually giving up completely. The hotel sent someone up from “technical services” who proceeded to restart my browser and then my machine to no good effect. He then pulled the plug on the router which fixed things but only long enough for him to get out of the room. I then tried the wireless access available in the lobby which worked fine until I tried this evening when it failed to give me an IP address. I’ve now had to resort to using my 3G card. 🙁

Driving tour of Madrid

January 22nd, 2008

Work took me back to Madrid this week. The trip didn’t get off to all that an auspicious start. I had hired a car as the customer is based some 20km out of the city centre however I had agreed to pick up one of the local team at the IBM office in town first. Unfortunately, at the airport Hertz were unable to provide me with any form of map, instead giving me the simple directions to “follow the signs for Madrid and then take the Avenida de America”.

Street-O Preview

January 20th, 2008

Sadly I’m not going to be around for the next SOC street event to be held in Valley Park this coming Thursday evening (see the SOC website for full details – anyone is welcome!) but this did mean I could help Christine with the planning. The area is fairly constrained due to the large blocks of woodland dividing up the housing so it was largely a case of shuffling around the controls from last year a bit. I think we’ve introduced a few new decision points and I’m still not clear in my own mind what constitutes the best route to collect all the controls. It took me nearly two hours to get round two-thirds of the controls but then I was walking with Emma in the pushchair and we did have to stop at the swings! I’ve measured just one possible route choice on the map (not necessarily the best) and at around eight miles I believe it should be possible to get them all. There’s a challenge for the keen reader if ever there was one!

Emma’s on the move

January 20th, 2008

469Lest I be accused of being the uncaring father I thought this blog was well overdue an update on my favourite (okay – and only) daughter. Emma’s coming up for eight months now and her latest trick is crawling. Having spent a couple of months waggling her bum in the air and shuffling backwards she has now well and truly mastered forward motion. Unfortunately, more often than not, her locomotion is in the direction of the nearest electric cables! She is also now able to switch at ease between sitting, crawling and lying. She demonstrated this the other morning when we woke to the sound of the mobile going round powered by a seated Emma – time to lower the cot base! Then yesterday she positioned herself in front of the TV/Hi-Fi stand and proceeded to remove CDs one by one. In summary – we now have some serious baby proofing to be done around the house. The other mark of Emma’s progress is her teeth. The bottom two came through a while back but, as previously mentioned, her top teeth have been fighting their way through since Christmas. Unfortunately it seems that Emma favours the vampire look as it is the lateral incisors that are coming through first!

Piecing together the fragments

January 18th, 2008

I’ve had my work T42p laptop for over three years now but, even for an extra gig of RAM, I’m still reluctant to hand it over for a shiny new Lenovo T61p quite yet. However, it’s been heading towards unusable over the past few months with the hard disk thrashing continuously. Repeated attempts to defragment have met with limited success as the 100Gb drive is bursting at the seams and PageDefrag could only reduce the number of fragments for my 4Gb page file from 170+ to around 110!

CompassSport Cup at Yately Heath

January 13th, 2008

The first round of the CompassSport Cup was scheduled early this year. The event for our area was at Yateley Heath and Minley Woods. For a change I was off before Christine which meant I was probably a little more focussed when I reached the start. Matthias Mahr was starting a minute before me which I hoped would lead to a good race.
