Return to New Forest O

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Today we headed over to Redshoot for the SOC District Event and our first orienteering since returning to the UK. There wouldn’t be time for me to do the Long-O (26km) and for Christine still to get a run in so I settled for the Black course (15km). The navigation wasn’t particularly taxing with the control sites being sufficiently obvious that one could afford to be a bit wayward on compass bearings. The terrain was hard going though, particularly after all the recent rain. After 95 minutes I was therefore perfectly happy not to have to go on to do another 10km.

First and last RR10

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Fortunately my current desk location in Hursley is away from the windows otherwise the sight of the rain hammering down might have deterred me from turning out for tonight’s RR10 – my first for the year and also the last of the season. The race was, however, actually at Hursley and, with the disbanding of IBM Hursley Runners earlier this year, it was my first chance to actually compete in this race.

Tuesday night running resumes

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Having driven through the pouring rain (and crawled through the roadworks on the M27) it was a pleasure to arrive at a sunlit Wilverley Plain for my first Tuesday night run of the year. It made a nice change for an hour long run not to involve half an hour running up hill followed by half an hour running downhill and also to have something other than solid rock (or bilberry) underfoot! Even better was the fact that I could buy six pints (admittedly three of which were shandies) and a corresponding number of packets of crisps and still get change from a twenty pound note!

Sun shines for PB

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

601My cunning plan to gain a personal best at this week’s Sognsvann Rundt Medsols was to run three laps for the first time. This nearly backfired when, at around five o’clock, the heavens opened. The rain was short-lived though and by the time we were running from the car (parked as close as we can get without going through the toll) to the start there was a wide expanse of blue sky.

As everyone lined up at the start it was clear that numbers were well down – no great surprise as we are now well in to the holiday season here. My legs felt fairly fresh on the first lap as they should have done having not run since the same time last week and having had a reasonable warm-up for a change. I resisted the temptation to race the first woman to the line only to find, as usual, that she carried on for the next lap. Given that she continued to pull away from me it was fortunate (for my male pride) that she then proceeded to stop at the end of the second lap. Indeed, everyone in front of me stopped at this point so I set out on the third lap in the lead.

Needless to say a stitch kicked in at this point – probably something to do with working at home in close proximity to Christine’s baking! Fortunately it eased after a few hundred metres and by half way round the last lap I was able to stretch out my legs a bit again. Perhaps just as well as the second and third placed runners were only about 20 seconds behind. So – a personal best both in time and position. Perhaps I should stop there!

Emma on a bike

Monday, July 14th, 2008

598Emma finally made it out on her first bike ride this evening. One of our neighbours had generously lent us an old bike and child seat ages ago but it took a while to get a helmet for Emma and then to get the seat attached to the bike (the bike it came off having a larger seat post). To offset her blue for boys helmet (they were out of the pink and neutral helmets in her size) Emma was sporting tights and skirt. Surprisingly (given her usual dislike of hats) Emma seemed to accept the helmet without too much fuss.

We were only out about 15 minutes as the spring return is locked solid on the front gears and I wasn’t going to tackle any of the local climbs on our first outing. It was long enough for Christine to get the vacuuming done which Emma hates. Emma seemed happy enough on the back of the bike although it is difficult to tell when she is tucked right behind you. She was burbling away to herself for much of the time although seemed to go quiet when we sped up. Not sure whether that’s fear or enjoyment! I don’t think we’re going to be planning any long trips given the state of the bike but it’s nice to have something else to do with her in the evenings and to know that it’ll be worth us getting her a seat when we get back to the UK.

Lastly, I would like to point out that the honking great 4×4 in the back of the photo is not ours!

Weekend in Oslo

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

595We’ve had a fairly quiet weekend at home in Oslo. Christine was sick on Thursday night (food poisoning we reckon although we’re not quite sure from what) and was still recovering. We just went in to town yesterday. We started out at the playground in Aker Brygge although Emma largely ignored this and just walked her buggy up and down instead. Next stop was the tourist information office in the hope that they would help us decide on the route for our summer trip to the west coast. Strangely enough, although very nice, they couldn’t really help in our general indecision between having a relaxing few weeks and cramming in the sights. We walked back home via Frognerparken as the sun was shining by this point.

Marathon Spectating

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

580We headed east to Rømskog this morning for Christine to run in the Unionsmarathon. After watching her start, Emma and I played in the sunshine on the grassy start/finish area, watched the kids run their races in some smart looking numbered vests, and then drove off after the marathon runners. We managed to see Christine a couple of times before reaching the Swedish border across which the hire car wasn’t allowed to go. Emma and I therefore stopped for lunch and then had a wander around the lake shore (only disturbing the one "optionally clothed" local!) before heading back to the finish. Christine finished in a good (given the terrain/climb) time of 4.5 hours and as second lady. It sounds like it was a bit of a struggle to get round but she seems to be recovering well afterwards. Just a shame she didn’t finish 10 minutes earlier so that we didn’t have to watch from the car whilst sheltering from the thunder and lightening!

O-festivalen

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

We’ve spent this weekend competing in the O-festivalen competition held at Siggerud on the outskirts of Oslo (not far from the IBM office). I went to Friday’s middle distance race on my own. It made a pleasant change not having to go off at one end or other of the start block and with minute intervals I was actually able to race round most of the course. It still took me just under 10 mins/k but with only a couple of minutes lost at the first control I was pleased with my run.
